The Weigh-In

Every October, Big Jack reports to the county weigh station before anyone asks. He settles across the platform, bends the needle past its final number, and waits. Forklifts reverse. Clipboards change hands. The night crew brings a second chair. Big Jack contributes nothing except a low, satisfied grin and the firm belief that the scale should apologize. The gate closes around him at dawn, without further discussion.
